He’ll tell you he’s not a prolific songwriter, but he is certainly a pathfinder. Robin Mark talks to Jon Lambert about life in Belfast and how worship is bred - in the heart, not the head.

In Ireland giants still walk: from windswept dunes, between the high gable-ends of Belfast and on the tongues of storytellers. Tales are told of the colossus, Finn Mac Cool: he flung the Isle of Man into its place, bridged the wild-green sea and cast his very footprint in the black earth of Northern Ireland. Not all Celtic giants, though, make for romance. In our own time, a creature going by the name ‘Troubles’ has been striding. In his wake reels a raw, forbidding landscape. It may seem strange but in this terrain, a shout of praise is echoing. If you know your Bible, you’ve heard the tale of the shepherd-songwriter versus Goliath: and of a simple trust in the God of stone and sling over the armour of a king.

Take a break from the credit crunch and get fresh inspiration in an ancient land. That’s the message from award-winning author Clive Price to fellow writers.
‘The economic downturn is like an ugly, nasty editor,’ said Clive, who will host Write Away, a recession-busting writers’ retreat in Co Donegal, Ireland, this autumn. ‘So as this monster breathes down our necks, we should regroup and gather new ideas.
‘Let’s encourage one another to become even more creative in the face of this brute. And if we sell an article or publish a book – we can wave that in its face.’ As a help to writers, the three-night event is being offered at an all-inclusive price of just €343.

Within one month, three New Testaments were dedicated in Papua New Guinea (PNG). However in the same period, tribal conflict broke out in the valley, where the main centre for Bible translation work in PNG, home to many Wycliffe members, is situated. “It’s very sad to hear of the violence,” said Heather Patrick, who has spent almost 30 years living and working in PNG and is currently based in the UK, “sad, but not a surprise. With three New Testament dedications in the past month and progress in many other translation projects, we shouldn’t be surprised that the devil wants to make things difficult.”

Hi Friends
I was around the age of 8 or 9 when my family bought a portable tape recorder.
That’s when I began to make my own shows. I’d record little bits of the TV
dialogue and put wee commentary’s on them. I’d interview my Dad or Mom for my
documentary’s and also try to record them when they weren’t looking. The craic
was ninety! I made little mix tapes of music and I sang wee songs and created
my own little albums. As I got older I was allowed to stay up late. There was a
show called The Old grey Whistle Test. A weird kinda bloke with a beard sat and
explained who was coming on next with a husky dry rasp. The whispering presenter
was strange and a little scary to me as a child and hard to get a sound on my
tape recorder. The music he introduced was good though. . Later they replaced
the whispering guy and got someone else.
Touring England a few years later the promoter driving the van pulled
into his friends house for afternoon Tiffin in the rural countryside of England.
We had scones with butter, strawberry jam and cream and refills of warm tea in
china cups on the veranda out the back whilst kids played on the trampoline. The
bloke who lived there was very nice. Very friendly and very hospitable. He spoke
in a deep gentle voice that soothed you whilst he told stories of interviewing
all four Beatles after they were no longer Beatles and shared tales of meeting
rock stars in such a down to earth manner that his humility was captivating. The
most unassuming gentle giant who was interesting, engaging and ever so friendly:
not at all scary like when he was on the Old Grey Whistle Test.
