The Met Office issued severe weather warnings for counties Antrim and Down today. And of course 102.4 Shine FM kept the community updated on developments.

In some places, half an inch of rain fell in just 30 minutes. This resulted in large volumes of water being washed into the rivers. The A1 Dual Carriageway between Lisburn and Newry was blocked by water for several hours this morning cause havoc and very long tail backs.

The Fire Service was called to reports of flooding in Banbridge and Newry in County Down and Lurgan in County Armagh. Several business and homes in the area were flooded! In Lurgan, the heavy rainfall left many streets flooded. In the outlying area of Katesbridge and Corbet the Bann River burst its banks leaving fields covered with water!

More rain is forecast for the week ahead!!

Descendants give unique salute to Ireland’s polar heroes
Tuesday, 15 January, 2008, 16:00
Posted by Administrator

Descendants of Ireland’s famous nineteenth-century Polar explorers are being summoned to an historic meeting of the families.

The unique event, which will be held in Banbridge, County Down, on 20 January 2008, will be the first meeting in over 150 years of relatives of celebrated explorers such as Captain Francis Crozier, Sir John Franklin, Sir Leopold McClintock, Sir James Clark Ross and many others.
The Banbridge gathering, which is being arranged by the family of the Banbridge-born explorer, Captain Crozier, was inspired by the current commemorations to mark the centenary of the death of Sir Leopold McClintock. A major exhibition about McClintock, who was born in Dundalk, opens at the County Museum, Dundalk on 18 November 2007. It was McClintock’s party who discovered vital clues to the fate of Crozier, Franklin and over 100 seamen who perished in the worst disaster in the history of Polar exploration.

The descendants’ gathering on 20 January 2008 will follow a service of thanksgiving for the explorers at Seapatrick Parish Church, which is opposite Avonmore House, the birthplace of Francis Crozier. Flowers will be laid at the Crozier Monument in Church Square.
Also in attendance will be author Michael Smith who wrote "Captain Francis Crozier; Last Man Standing" the biography of Captain Crozier. Copies of the book are available from Tourist Information Centre at the Outlet (for contact details please see below).
