“Equality laws are not optional extras which can be dispensed with in hard times”, Bob Collins, Chief Commissioner of the Equality Commission said today.

Responding to suggestions that employers should give preference to people from Northern Ireland if jobs become vacant, Mr. Collins said that the law on the matter was clear. “Under the Race Relations (Northern Ireland) Order 1997 it is unlawful to discriminate on grounds of race or nationality when recruiting employees. Employers cannot limit the range of applicants for jobs in Northern Ireland by reference to national identity nor show preference on that ground between those who apply for jobs.”

Unemployment fears rise in small businesses as the country slides into recession

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) reported a dramatic rise in calls to its legal advice line on redundancies from concerned small businesses, on the same day as the official announcement that the UK is in recession.

The FSB’s legal helpline saw an extraordinary 214 per cent increase in calls in the fourth quarter of last year as small businesses cut back on costs and sought advice on employment issues and redundancies.

During the first half of last year the FSB saw a comparatively small 27 per cent increase on 2007. But as the downturn spiralled, small firms’ calls in the latter part of the year rose to a worrying 167 per cent – nearly 8,200 calls.

Massive push for schools across Northern Ireland to do RSPB’s Big Schools Birdwatch

Amazingly, hundreds of schoolchildren across Northern Ireland will want to keep quiet in classrooms this month to spy on some special neighbours.

Classrooms will be turned into bird hides, binoculars will be fixed to eyes and children will be staring out of windows. Why? To take part in the world’s biggest bird survey, the RSPB Big Schools’ Birdwatch.

Running from 19 - 30 January 2009, the survey encourages children and their teachers to look for and count the birds that share their school environment.
