The world is sitting up and taking notice of Manchester once again. Jon Lambert finds out why

Out on the steps of Portsmouth Guildhall, a triumph is being proclaimed. Queen Victoria, stoic atop her plinth, is wreathed by the glitzy screen of a giant outdoor TV, on which a constellation of British Olympians have been taking Beijing by storm. Inside the building, full to capacity, is frenetic with thousands of young people meeting God in worship, led by the incendiary Audacious band. Last night I saw Glyn Barrett onstage at the Audacious conference. Bathed in the glow of a colossal neon Union Jack, he exhorted the congregation of young people from across Great Britain to abandon compromise and mediocrity, to surrender to enthusiasm and servant-heartedness and to leave a legacy which outlasts the purely physical.

Right from the start of their lives in Inglewood, California, the young Tina and Erica Campbell were immersed in music. Their mother was a dedicated choir leader and each Friday afternoon the house would reverberate with voices, including Erica’s, raised in song. “Saturday was choir, so Friday I would always get called on to sing the alto part, while my mom would sing the soprano parts. Everybody else got to play and I had to go to choir rehearsal. ”

Tina’s instinct, meanwhile, found her alone, composing music. “I do know that early on I did start writing songs and I did say that I was making up songs. I’d be in my room and I’d say to my sisters ‘Don’t come in here, I’m recording’. I didn’t realise that that was the making of a songwriter.”
